Hamburg to Nyehusen

Baltic Sea Circle Day 3

We intended to wake early and set off driving but we needed an extra hour of sleep. After getting up and making a quick breakfast of granola and coffee we packed our tent away and left the campsite with the campsite owner bidding me farewell in German.

Today’s plan was to travel up the A7 autobahn to Denmark and then pass through Copenhagen and cross the bridge to Malmö in Sweden. Following that we could try the first challenge in the roadbook: perform a Viking consecration to wish us good luck on our journey. We needed as much luck as we could get!

The rally rules stated that we could used the motorways on the first and last day of the rally, and also have three other uses of 120km or less. We were considering this our first day, so the fast road would help us.

One of the challenges from the roadbook was to make trades along the way, starting with a paper clip. We’re allowed to trade once in each country and the team with the best thing at the end wins some points. Just before the Danish border we pulled into a rest stop and asked a man who was standing by his car. He was happy to help and gave us a pen in exchange for our paper clip.

We sped north into Denmark and through the border checkpoint, the guard asking us where we were headed, and reminding us that we need to always use our headlights in Denmark. The Porsche made light work if the motorways now, seeming to have warmed up a little from yesterday’s German experience. Soon we were heading towards the Danish capital, and stopped for lunch near Middelfart at a motorway rest stop. We had a few people come look at the car and got chatting g to one man who thought our journey was crazy, but he could give us a padlock in exchange for our pen. Danish trade done!

The main challenge for the day was to head for Ales Stenar on the Baltic Sea coast. We used our map to plot a route and got there without issue. The climb up the hill to see the Viking stones was not that easy as it was warm and we were getting tired, but the view from the site was amazing.

We had collected a few things to perform our Viking ceremony, a Swedish branch, wind from the Baltic, water from the sea, Danish sand, and Scandinavian iron (a rusty nut we’d found on the path!) and crawled around one of the stones. Task complete!

We headed down the hill again back to the car, we planned to get to a campsite 40 mins away. We first chatted to the guy selling ice creams and coffee, he was following us on instagram! He was very kind and gave us free coffees and we left him with a wave from the car.

We arrived at our campsite and enquired if there was space, there was and at 295 SEK it was a deal, they even had hot showers. We put up the tent and made some dinner, gnocchi with pesto and mushrooms. We had a lovely chat with a fellow camper, and explained what we were doing, and our problems getting started. She was eager to help us trade up and offered us a bag of ground espresso beans from a small roastery in Germany. Amazing!!

We planned the next day, our task tomorrow would be to find ABBA’s old tour bus in a abandoned junkyard in the forest! Read tomorrow to find out if we find it!

Before heading to sleep we did sone checks on the car, all looking good, ready gor more adventures.
